This article on safe spaces digs into important aspects such as history, members, and the opportunity to heal offered by these spaces. To begin, we explore the historic meaning of the term and compare it with today’s conception of safe spaces. We then explore the need for these spaces and the reasons they exist. We also cover the historical importance for exclusive safe spaces and the problems that might arise from these. Lastly, we look at a method for ensuring that safe spaces are long lasting and include how we will implement all of the above information for the Black Healing Centre.
Interesting Findings:
Interesting aspects of this research are the ways that fear felt by marginalized communities have been used against them to restrict or ban them from certain spaces. The ways that safe spaces have been used for education or lifestyle choices such as Historically Black universities or colleges or communes in the United States are also very interesting.
